Mobility Scooters

Pride Celebrity XL8 Scooter

Mobility Scooters come in all shapes and sizes and may be suitable for your use if you have:

  1. Reasonable sitting balance
  2. The ability to transfer from a sitting to standing position independently
  3. The ability to drive the scooter on your own
  4. Sufficient shoulder and arm strength and movement to operate a handle bar style control
  5. Sufficient vision, perception and hearing to operate the scooter safely

The different types of mobility scooter are best described within four categories; Micro, Mini, Midi and Maxi. As you would expect, the capabilities and prices differ greatly but typically they will be along the following lines:

Micro Scooters

These are the smallest of the scooter ranges which are used primarily indoors. They are not suitable for use on the roads (otherwise called Class 2 scooters). They have a maximum speed of up to 4mph and are easily transported in a car.

Mini Scooters

Moving up slightly in size and weight, these will have the same sort of features and restrictions as the Micro scooters including a maximum speed of up to 4mph though they are not so easily transported by car.

Midi Scooters

Again, the next size up, this scooter is better suited to outdoor road and pavement use and can have a maximum speed of up to 8 mph. Due to their increased size, these scooters tend not to be easily transported in cars but are able to cover greater distances.

Maxi Scooters

As the name suggests, these are the biggest of the mobility scooters and are for outdoor use. They tend to offer the user more options and higher levels of performance with speeds up to 8mph and generally higher levels of comfort.
